Starting seedlings in March for squash and cucumbers.  Hopefully the squash vine borer will stay away long enough to get some harvest out of these.

Last year we started the peas in the garden on St. Patrick's Day.  This year, the weather in Massachusetts has not been cooperating as nicely for us and we had to wait almost 2 weeks longer to start seeds.  Now that the soil in the beds is workable and a bit warmer, peas, lettuce, and radishes went in.  We've kept the intensive gardening method and have tied new string to mark off the squares.  The trellis in the back is for the peas to grow on - hopefully they will take to it.

Only one bed is started so far but the first weekend in April we'll get to making them all workable and toast to a new 2013 Spring garden!

November 2012

This was the last watermelon we harvested. We were afraid it wasn't ripe enough yet, so we kept it for about 4 weeks in front of the wondow. Finally last week we cut it open and it was perfect!

These raspberries ripened last october early november. Can you believe it?

Harvested a bunch of oregano and sage. Also brought the potted rosemary and bay leaf inside.
Harvest: last batch of beans, lots of peppers, tomatillos, tomatoes.

Harvesting herbs to freeze for the winter.

Beth replanted cucumbers about 6 weeks ago when all our squash and cucumber plants were destroyed by the squash vine borer. The cucumber plants now have new cucumbers on them. Hope we get a bunch before the weather really gets too cold.

The tomatillos are still growing well.

Tomatoes are winding downs.

Beth, my mom and I cleaned the garden quite a bit this weekend: took out tomatoes, most of the means, cabbage, brussel sprouts.

My mom inspecting the carrots.

Harvested some of our brussel sprouts.

We actually have lots of raspberries now.

Tomatoe plants are winding down.

We have lots of tomatos now, all kinds!

The tomato plants are completely out of control. Huge bushes.

These are the current tomatos. They are tiny, the size of a current. We have a million of them, the bush is packed.

Eggplant is finally growing fruit.

Bush beans are growing lots of beans now too.

A female watermelon blossom.
The first watermelon is growing.

leeks is ready

The watermelon plant is getting very big.

I hope to get more raspberries next year. I harvested about 15 berries about 2 weeks ago. There are still a few coming but not many.

Tomatillos.

We have a million current tomatoes growing now. I can't believe that from those tiny little seeds these monster bushes have grown.

Honey bear pumpkin. I have never had it. Will let you know how it tastes!

The cabbages are doing much better! The cabbage worm problem seems to be resolved.

It's Harvest time! This weekend we harvested: peas, zucchini, green beans, arugula, lettuce, mulberries, green onions, peppers and herbs.

The peas and beans are growing well! There is nothing better than young peas right off the plant.

mini cauliflower

First eggplant blossom.

How long do carrots take to grow? Feels like these have been growing for ever but the carrots are still tiny while the greens are big.

We have lots of zuccini blossoms. Mostly male but some female. Since there were no female blossoms on the plant I took all the male blossoms that were open off and fried them up. Look at the recipe and the pictures here.

The cabbage is growing really well. Can't wait to make sauerkraut!

Our watermelon is growing very slowly. And it has some little yellow dots on the leaves, anyone know what that means?

growing brussel sprouts for the first time

the garlick is doing great!

one week later

These are my little one week old bok choi seedlings. Something is nibbling on them.

Last year our squash plants had only male blossoms for weeks! It was very frustrating because we didn't get any squash for 4 weeks although there were many flowers. This year we already have female flowers. I took a picture of the female flower on the pattipan squash. ↘

We have 4 blueberry bushes now. And some of them have blueberries on them alreay, they are still green but pretty big already.

We planted a ton of potatos in grow bags. Mostly fingerling potatos, white and purple. Can't wait to see how these turn out. We have never grown potatos before.
