Our Rooster Had to Go!

We knew it for a while now, but the little white chick we got from the breeder about 2 months ago, was a rooster. About a week ago he started crowing. We had many conversations about what to do with him, because we can't keep him. We don't have a permit and the crowing would annoy everyone on the street. So the question was, who would kill him?

Yesterday morning he was crowing and Mike heard it for the first time. The crowing went on for about 10 minutes while I was loading the truck with Mike to drive into Cambridge and do some work on our condo.

As I walk around the car to put some stuff next to the passenger seat I see Mike with the rooster's neck on a wood block, axe in the other hand. I was completely shocked, I didn't expect that, since there was no warning at all.

A few chops later, the rooster was dead. As all of you have heard before, he continues to move around for a couple of minutes although his head was off. Mike heald his body though, so he couldn't run around and bruise his meat.

I got a trash bag for the head and a bucket for the body.

Later that day I plucked the feathers off and this morning I removed the legs, wings and breast to eat for dinner tonight.

Sorry lille rooster! And thank you for your delicous meat.

In Memory of Our Hamburg

The sad story of our Hamburg
The second day we had our coop, we were building a pen for our chickens. While we were building it the chickens were running around in our back yard. Suddenly a Hawk came down from one of the trees and killed the Hamburg. She was Mike's favorite chicken and unfortunately we lost it the very second day we had her.In honor of our fallen Hamburg we created the Arcadia Farm logo with her in it. So she will not be forgotten!

Cooking the Hamburg
We knew that killing chickens would be part of having chickens eventually, but we didn't think we had to face this task so quickly. We didn't have to kill the Hamburg but now that it was dead we had to decide what to do with it. So we cooked it for dinner. I plucked it, Beth removed head and feet and Mike gutted it. Then I prepared a delicious beer can chicken on the grill. The chicken tasted great, the meat was a bit tough though, because it was a 2 year old chicken. But now I feel much better prepared for the next time. Maybe we will even raise some meat chickens sometime.
